My Favorite Blogs

The Busty Baker

The Busty Baker is the perfect blog for home bakers who are tired of using boxed mixes.  Creative recipes are all you will find, no boxed mixes in sight.  She even has put bacon into a cupcake, that’s right I said BACON!  Really proving the point that bacon does make everything better.  Aside from the bacon cupcakes, recipes like Salted Dulce de Leche Brownies, Lavender Lemon Scones, and many more delectable treats can be found.  If the recipes weren’t enough to pull you in, the pictures will.  Gooey, chocolate chip cookies next to a glass of cold milk make my mouth water.  Great site for those who want baking inspiration!

Baker’s Royale

Naomi, a self-taught baker who one day decided to share her own recipes created Baker’s Royale.  Speaking to all self-taught, home bakers, she maintains a wide variety of recipes from Pumpkin Roll to Blueberry Macarons, all ranging in difficulty.  When you enter the site, you’re greeted with a slideshow of featured recipes.  Currently it features Coconut Mango Cake, Banana Split Éclairs, and Hazelnut Crepes.  “How To” articles also teach home bakers to make a simple caramel sauce, basic pastry cream, and lemon curd.   There is even the occasional giveaway where you could win a KitchenAid mixer, juicer, and a Le Creuset stockpot.

Pink Patisserie

Maria Nelson, a self-taught baker who uses inspiration from her Grandmothers and various family traditions, created Pink Patisserie.  Pink Patisserie main focus is Fresh pastries, both sweet and savory.  Gorgonzola and sweet potato biscuits, Eggnog Biscotti cheesecake, and brown butter, Amaretto, and pear crumble are just a few of the many recipes that one can find.  Maria’s food photography skills are amazing.  She photographs the food in a way that makes me want to get into my kitchen and start cooking.  She does not over complicate the pictures with unnecessary props, just pictures of the food to show all its textures and color.

100 Days of Real Food

Starting in 2010, Lisa Leake and her family pledged to eat only “real” food.  This meant cutting out all processed food from her diet.  During the 100 days, Lisa shared her experience and recipes with the world through her blog.  She wrote about her chocolate cravings and health benefits of the pledge.  Even though the 100 days is well over, she continues to posts recipes and resources for avoiding processed foods.  “Whole-Wheat Carrot Applesauce Muffins” and food tips like “8 ways to avoid processed food” can be used as resources for those who wish to take the pledge.  Another unique feature is the meal planner.  This is great for those who want to eat “real food”, but struggle with meal ideas.

Love & Olive Oil

A couple, Lindsay and Taylor, created Love and Olive Oil with a focus on inexpensive, quick, and creative meals for home cooks.  Recipes such as goat cheese sugar cookies, and Moonshine-glazed doughnuts (yes they do use legal Moonshine) are all waiting to be tried.  The blog’s design is simple; the background looks like crumbled white paper with green and gray accents.  Navigating through the blog is effortless.  Clicking on the “Browse Recipes” page allows you to find recipes by category, ingredients, and date.  A “Recipe Box” page allows you to sign in using Facebook and save recipes that you want to make.  It will also create a shopping list for selected recipes, making it easier to recreate at home.

Bon Appétempt
Video Attempt: Holiday Cocktails and Spicy Almonds

Amelia Morris runs Bon Appétempt with the help of Matt Bookman, the photographer and taste tester.  This blog is a collection of Amelia’s various culinary attémpts, some more successful than others.  For the holidays, Amelia created a video post that showed the humor in creating cocktails.  During the introduction, which was shot after making three drinks, she reminisces about the Christmas stockings hanging on the fireplace.  She tells a funny story of how her mom, who needle points, debuted her husband’s stocking.  His stocking was much different than the rest and it even hung a different way.  Then you cut to Amelia making the cocktails, which she fumbles through, seeming to already have had too much to drink.  Suggesting that maybe you need a few cocktails before spending a day with your family!
